Coulthard Breaks The Duck, Ends Schumachers' Streak

Posted: Sunday, 26 May 2002 (23:34)

You gotta love today's race! Formula 1 came to the most glamorous, twistiest and tightest circuit on the calendar, i.e. Monaco. David Coulthard finally ended the Schumacher brothers' winning streak for this year's grand prix. He was very much in the lead in his McLaren throughout the race right from the beginning after a superb start from 2nd place despite having a couple of scares during the race itself with some slight smoke coming out of his engine and the Michelin tires behaving rather peculiarly. Juan Pablo Montoya (Williams BMW) posed some challenge behind Coulthard for about 30-something laps before retiring due to engine failure. Michael Schumacher (Ferarri) was then pretty much in Coulthard's rear view mirror all the way to the chequered flag but wasn't able to do much due to the tight nature of the track. The younger Schumacher had a relatively easy race towards the end. The position for 4th and 5th was fought tooth and nail all the way to the end between Jarno Trulli (Renault) and Giancarlo Fisichella (Jordan Honda) with the former triumphing. Barichello (Ferarri) did put up a fight for the last point of the race with Frentzen (Orange Arrows) but the latter held on to the end for the deserved point leaving Barichello walking away empty handed from the race.

Race standings: 1 - David Coulthard (McLaren Mercedes), 2 - Michael Schumacher (Ferarri), 3 - Ralf Schumacher (Williams BMW), 4 - Jarno Trulli (Renault), 5 - Giancarlo Fisichella (Jordan Honda), 6 - Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Orange Arrows)
